Lao Tzu - Tao Te Ching by Ursula K. Leguin

A modern translation of the great Taoist classic by a leading American author. Le Guin's version avoids scholarly interpretations and esoteric Taoist insights and focuses on the "Tao Te Ching's" immediate relevance--its universality, depth, and refreshing humor--showing why it has been so loved over the centuries.

Eastern Religion Editor's Recommended Book

Like Stephen Mitchell, acclaimed author and poet Ursula K. Le Guin has attempted a nonliteral, poetic rendition of the Tao Te Ching. She brings to it a punctuated grace that can only have been hammered out during long trials of wordsmithing. The wisdom that she finds in the Tao Te Ching is primal, and her spare, undulating phrases speak volumes. By making the text her own, Le Guin avoids such questions as "Is it accurate?" By making it her own, she has made it for us--a new, uncarved block from which we are free to sculpt our own meaning.

Tao Te Ching : 25th-Anniversary Edition by Lao Tsu, Gia-Fu Feng (Translator), Jane English (Translator)

Scholars say that the original Tao Te Ching is a poem. Like a poem, this version of the Tao Te Ching is not meant to be read in one breath from front to back, but is to be at intervals internalized and contemplated. Jane English's haunting black-and-white photos that undulate in and out on every page act as glycerin elixirs, helping the words slide into our souls for patient digestion. The photographs--of a glistening spider web, cloud-enveloped mountain tops, reflections on water, leaves in the sunlight--are as serenely lyrical as the ancient text, itself.

Tao Te Ching: An Illustrated Journey by Lao Tzu, Stephen Mitchell

Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching (The Book of the Way) is a timeless guide to the art of living. Its central figure, the Master, lives in harmony with the Tao, the irreducible essence of the universe. Surrendering to it as the Master teaches, we feel whole. Emptying ourselves of judgment and desire, we discover the universal truths within: Without wanting, we find peace; if we let go of what we love, our love becomes present.

Stephen Mitchell's acclaimed translation of this age-old text has sold more than half a million copies worldwide. Here, for the first time, it is illustrated with Chinese paintings selected by Asian art expert Dr. Stephen Little. The perfect depiction of plants, animals, and birds expresses harmony with nature, the principal teaching of the Tao; the mountainous landscapes are the heavenly home of the Tao. Each brushstroke is painted with precision, just as each word of Mitchell's translation speaks with unmatched power.

This inspired translation, combined with the best images in Chinese art, will ensure that the Tao Te Ching continues to exert a profound influence into the next century.

Tao Te Ching: The New Translation (Sacred Arts) by Man-Ho Kwok, Martin Palmer, Jay Ramsay

Whether there ever was such a person as Lao Tzu is not certain, but that the "Tao Te Ching" has been one of the most important texts in Chinese culture for over 2000 years is beyond question. In recent years its influence outside China has grown enormously, and it is now probably the best-known Chinese text in the West. This fresh translation reveals it as not so much a single work as a collection of ancient sayings and commentaries which together aim to light the way to a deeper understanding of both the self and the world. The authors describe the "Tao Te Ching" as a string of pearls - individual and separate, yet with an overall effect of beauty and with a pattern which unites them - which speaks across the centuries and between cultures and peoples.

For more than 2,500 years, the Tao Te Ching has been the major underlying influence in Chinese thought and culture. This outstanding collector's edition is a completely fresh translation, meticulously drawn from the earliest known Chinese manuscript, and rendered into a powerful text by poet John Ramsay. Illustrated in full color with calligraphy and 14th-century Chinese paintings.

Tao Te Ching: Ma - Wang - Tui Texts

Lao-tzu's "Te-Tao Ching" has been treasured for thousands of years for its poetic statement of life's most profound and elusive truths. This new translation, based on the 1973 discovery of two copies of the manuscript more than five centuries older than any others known, corrects many defects of the later versions. In his extensive commentary, Professor Henricks reevaluates traditional interpretations.

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse

Read this journey of Self-discovery, and then, perhaps you too, will be inspired to discover the Real Truth, about your own self/soul! This book is for those " Soul-seekers " that do believe, that there is so much more to life and to ones' inner experiences than what MTV, spectator sports and endless materialism can and do only provide. An excellent little book! I included this book in the taoist section, because I don't relate to Buddhism as much as to Taoism - it seemed to me that Siddhartha felt the same... Rich Brown

The Tao of Womanhood by Diane Dreher

From Booklist , April 1, 1998

The Tao te Ching, reputedly by the Chinese sage Lao-tzu, is one of the great spiritual books of all time. Most translations into English use the masculine generic, making it seem as though only males were intended to benefit from its wisdom. Thus one welcome aspect of Dreher's book is the recasting of Taoist thought into language directed at or inclusive of women. Dreher's adaptations are direct and lyrical: "Treasure this knowledge: / The woman of Tao / Wears common clothing / And precious jade / Close to the heart." But she also expands upon the insights provided, fleshing them out with her own grounded, mature philosophy. As a self-help book that affirms women's right (and obligation) to help themselves into greater serenity and agency, this is one of the best and most thoughtful of such books in several years. The Tao of Parenting by Greta Nagel

Greta Nagel, author of The Tao of Teaching, turns the spotlight of Taoist wisdom on the seemingly insoluble problems of parenting. As in her previous book, the text is divided into 81 chapters, like the Tao Te Ching itself. Each chapter has a heading from the Tao, followed by a page or so of explication, and these passages in turn are followed by real-life illustrative stories from four families Nagel interviewed. The family stories help to flesh out the philosophical bones, showing how real individuals solved (or sometimes failed to solve) their problems. As you would expect from a book based on Lao-Tsu, there is great emphasis on calmness, flexibility, listening closely to others and respecting your own capacity for common sense and good judgment. The whole exercise will seem a bit earnest to some people, but the format is user-friendly, and the basic lessons (e.g., "Tranquility is more important than perfection" and "When you don't know, say so") deserve repetition. Especially by parents. --Richard Farr

Midwest Book Review:

Sports today seems all to often to be poisoned by greed, incivility, and violence. The Tao Of Sports is just the antidote for the depressed sports fan, player, coach, and club owner. The Tao Of Sports offers a refreshing look at the mysteries and challenges of athletic competition. Part philosophy, part poetry, part common sense, The Tao Of Sports is a spiritual roadmap to self-discovery and to understanding the great paradoxes of the the sports, athletics, and the Game: defeat and joy, struggle and serenity, anarchy and peace, fear and confidence. Witty, passionate, and thoughtful, The Tao Of Sports is a Zen guide, a coaching manual, an athlete's playbook, and a very engaging, informative reading for any fan who ever rooted for a player or a team.

Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao by Mantak Chia

Reviewer: Ruth Henriquez Lyon from Duluth, Minnesota USA

This book clearly describes two meditation exercises to improve the flow of chi through the energy circuits in the body. The first involves sending positive energy to your internal organs and other structures so that they can function better. The second is the "microcosmic orbit," a very ancient practice which moves energy in a circular motion up the spine, over the head, down the front of the body, and back up the spine. At the end of this exercise the chi is then focused in the Tan Tien center, right below the navel.

The microcosmic orbit differs from the Hatha Yoga practice of raising the kundalini energy up the spine in that in the Taoist practice you always bring the energy back down, thus grounding it. Much of the purported danger in these sorts of energy exercises comes from leaving the energy "raised," which sometimes happens in Hatha Yoga, or so I am told.

Thus I don't agree with the warnings that these exercises are dangerous when not practiced with a master. Although I do have a Tai chi/Chi Kung teacher, I started these exercises years ago when I was working alone. The most notable change that I have experienced doing the microcosmic orbit is that I have many more lucid dreams than ever before, plus a sense of having a clearer energy field.

It is important to note that Chia does not make any reference to Taoist yoga as a religious practice. You may do these exercises as a Taoist, a Christian, a Buddhist, a Wiccan, whatever. They are simply exercises to learn about and work with your own life-force energy.

If you are working with a teacher, this book is a good adjunct as it has diagrams of the energy pathways and certain internal organs which you should know about. If you don't yet have a teacher, the book will introduce the subject in a straightforward, simple way that you can easily work with.

Introduction What Is Cosmic Healing Chi Kung?

Cosmic Healing Chi Kung is an important branch of Universal Tao, a system of Taoist practices for cultivating the body, the Chi, and the spirit. Chi means "energy" or "life force"; kung means "work." Cosmic Healing Chi Kung is the cultivation of the ability to conduct Chi for the purposes of healing.

Book Description:

Presents the esoteric Taoist science of Cosmic Healing Chi Kung, which promotes healing using color and astral energies

• Includes practices for cleansing the blood of toxins, relieving pain, using sexual energy for healing, and other tools for the treatment and prevention of disease

• Explains the unique healing potential of chi kung color therapy and how to harness universal and earthly elemental energies in healing • By Mantak Chia, coauthor of The Multi-Orgasmic Man • New edition of Cosmic Healing I

Taoists believe in an underlying unity that permeates the universe and intimately binds all things. Taoist Cosmic Healing presents chi kung techniques that develop and strengthen awareness of the forces and energetic principles of the universe and the earthly six directions, allowing the reader to draw upon these forces for healing themselves and others.

Taoist Cosmic Healing teaches the reader how to use the major acupuncture points in the hands to activate, open, and balance the chi meridians throughout the body. This practice allows the student to detoxify and rejuvenate the major organ systems and, when combined with specific body positions and the chi kung stance, to heal others. Through Mantak Chia's profound understanding of the ancient esoteric science of guiding chi energy, students can learn how to harness the astral energies of specific stars. Master Chia also explains the important role that compassion and positive energy play in enhancing one's ability to heal. He presents for the first time in the West the details of chi kung color therapy and how it can activate and strengthen the immune system.

Awaken Healing Light of the Tao by Mantak Chia, Maneewan Chia, and Master Mantak

Reviewer: Victor K Linrom Eugene, OR United States

I just read this book. It took me about a year to do so and to get a good sense practicing what it preaches. As with many of us, I seek not Enlightenment (yet), I seek to understand qigong. What is qi? Specifically. As a Western scientist, I want to know what qi is/does. Is it physiologic? Is it truly spiritual? Psychological? A mixture? What I do know is that it is not something that someone can teach, or prove/disprove. Once I find the answer, I can have that answer only for myself.

That being said, this book by Mantak Chia is an extremely long, comprehensive, step-by-step guidebook on establishing the Microcosmic Orbit through a series of meditation practices ranging from the beginning to the advanced. Some reviewers are arguing that it is right/wrong, that imagery is right/wrong (let me guess, you're from the Kumar Frantzis camp, right?)-- well I'm here to tell you that I'm simply looking for what works. I don't care about right/wrong. Does it work for me? Chia goes on to explain that eventually, you can dispense with such ancillary tools as focusing on the breath, or imagery, or others, but in the beginning, they help facilitate mastery.

This was a great book. A nice roadmap of things to try. I've been trying now for awhile, and I believe I am feeling my microcosmic orbit, the energies that Chia describes from the earth and cosmic forces. I have even begun experiencing, ironically, what seems very much like the "mindstream" described by BK Frantzis in his Water Meditation Books (which I have also reviewed), by using some of Chia's techniques. Ironical, eh?

So far, I have gathered together an eclectic sequence that WORKS FOR ME. This is a great source of information for meditation techniques. I have adapted some from Frantzis, as well as from translations from Cleary and others. On top of formal instruction in regular classwork.

I doubt I'll use it all, but for any of you out there looking for at least one roadmap, this is a good one, IMO. I think there are many paths to this journey. This is one path. I will probably walk many paths before espousing a route of my own...

Healing Love Through the Tao: Cultivating Female Sexual Energy by Mantak Chia, Maneewan Chia (Contributor), Juan Li (Illustrator)

Reviewer: ntr from Maryland, USA

This book is absolutely essential to those serious about taking their sex, and really their entire life, to the next level of spiritual fulfillment. I have so many good things to say about this book. It was discontinued for years and I finally managed to find a copy of it for my collection. After introducing the reader to some basic Taoist principles of energy and stress and spirituality, which it explains very well and in clear discourse, it launches into the main part of the book - direct application. The book is not just about sex, it is about sexual energy. First the power and different uses of sexual energy is explained, then the book goes over exercises women can do to harness the power of their latent sexual energy to vitalize their body and spirit. This part requires great practice and is frustrating sometimes because there are so many parts to the exercise and some parts take a long time to master. Completing this is best, but not necessary, before moving on to the interactive lessons of the book. Mastering these exercises in and of themselves will change your life as your find you have more energy, less or no PMS, a better attitude, and a more focused perspective. Then the next part of the book gives you a series of exercises designed to help you better enjoy and more heartily contribute to your own sexual experience. Some of these exercises are difficult or take time but I can personally guarantee you they are worth your while. The Egg Exercise alone is worthy of buying the whole book! This part also shows how to transform some of the sexual energy created during sex into spiritual energy. The third part is very interactive and spells out techniques to employ during sexual activity. And good things come to those who wait because this portion is the easiest to learn and master. Techniques range from those designed to create longer and more intense orgasms to those designed to heal physical imbalances in the body to those meant to strengthen emotional connections between partners to those meant to be a supra-meditative experience where you "touch the face of God" even. It's amazing and there is something for anybody. Seriously, this book is an awesome and powerful tool. And it needs to be taken seriously by those who really want to awaken their entire selves, souls, hearts to the joyous experience of living. Your partner will thank you for the rest of your relationship. Most importantly, you will thank yourself for the rest of your life.
