Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries
by Evans-Wentz, W

This is a testament in itself, as this was first published around 1890. A collection of reports, and stories of faery encounters in every Celtic nation, ranging from firsthand accounts to "a friend of a friend" legends to stories handed down through the generations. After a presentation of mass information on the modern fairy faith, it goes on to relate the ancient fairy beliefs held by the Celts of old, as recorded in their mythology. The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries is a source document nonpareil and an absolute must read for anyone with a serious interest in the Fairy Faith.

Myths Of The Norsemen
by Guerber, H A

In this volume, a noted scholar of myth and folklore has assembled a rich collection of Northern mythology as preserved in the sagas of Iceland. These are perhaps the purest versions of the original myths, thanks to the island`s remoteness and lack of contact with outside influences. Both grand and tragic, the age-old tales tell of the creation of the world; the heroic deeds of such gods and heroes as Odin, Thor and Siegfried; the machinations of the evil Loki; the fantastical adventures of giants, dwarfs and elves; the twilight of the gods; and much more. Sixty-four marvelous, atmospheric illustrations add an additional dimension of charm.

Leaves of Yggdrasil by Freya Aswynn

When I began to study the runes, this is the book I started with, and I'm so glad I did. Aswynn's approach to the runes is a well balanced blend of experience, intuition, and impeccable scholarship. She does much more than give divinatory meanings of the runes: She also describes their uses in practical magick and as keys to the Mysteries. One of the most intriguing aspects of this book is Aswynn's discussion of the intimate relationship between the runes and Northern Germanic mythology. Refreshingly, Aswynn also pays a good deal of attention to female archetypes in the runes and the mythology, and she does this on a basis of sound research and reasoning. Further highlights are her analysis of the Nine Worlds of Nordic mythology and her original rune layouts for divination.

Favorite Norse Myths by Mary Pope Osbourne and Troy Howell

Brisk, workmanlike retellings of some of the major stories in Norse mythology, beginning with the creation and ending with the destruction of the world at Ragnarok, and including familiar tales about Thor, Loki, and Odin. A slow, somewhat confusing start gives way to well-told stories but it's the accompanying material that makes this volume exceptional. Each chapter begins with a quote from the Poetic Edda which, along with the Prose Edda, makes up much of the foundation of what is known about Norse mythology. The concluding chapter gives further information about myths and sources, pronunciation guides, information on symbolism and runes, and a brief entry on all of the characters and places. The striking illustrations will be carefully scrutinized; each full-page and double-page oil painting would be stunning in itself, but each one overlays runic drawings of the same subject; these hover, ghost- like, within each picture. Osborne's careful research and Howell's outstanding approach to illustration make this a worthy entry in the World's Great Stories series.

Norse Myths by Kevin Crossley-Holland

A reader from Centralia, WA, USA , February 10, 1999 :

Invaluable in the study of Norse Mythology.

I bought this book as a part of an analysis of Norse Mythology, and found it more than useful. Not only does the author show the myths in a new light, but also includes and in-depth background of each myth and an informative introduction. The bibliography has separate headings for each topic of research, and the glossary is useful for those who have trouble keeping track of the often confusing names.

An excellent retelling of the Norse myths

Tarot Deck: Celtic Dragon (deck & book)
by Conway & Hunt

Are dragons real? Since they do not live on the physical plane, scientists cannot trap and dissect them. Yet magicians and pyschics who have explored the astral realms know firsthand that dragons do indeed exist, and that they make very powerful co-magicians. Dragons tap into deeper currents of elemental energies than humans. Because of their ancient wisdom, dragons are valuable contacts to call upon when performing any type of divination, such as the laying out of tarot cards. Tarot decks and other divination tools seem to fascinate them. The Celtic Dragon is the first deck to use the potent energies of dragons for divination, magickal spell working, and meditation. Ancient map makers noted every unknown territory with the phrase "here be dragons." Both tarot and magick have many uncharted areas. Not only will you discover dragons waiting there, but you will also find them to be extremely helpful when you give them the chance. Kit includes 78 full-color cards, 216 pages illustrated paperback.

Runelore: A Handbook of Esoteric Runology by Edred Thorsson

This book is divided in two parts. First part, Historical Lore, presents a history of the runes in a more realistic, scientific view using examples form archaeology to support certain theories of how the runes where invented (examples of runic writing with explanations are found throughout the book especially in the first part). The first 5 chapters of the book are chronologically organised and present the rune evolution from the oldest findings to the most recent ones. Chapters 6, 7, 8 try to explain the way the runes were used by the Norse and also give written examples which try to explain the runes. Especially useful are chapters 6 and 7, which try to explain the runes and the runic inscriptions. The second part, Hidden Lore, uses a philosophical and psychological approach to explain the runes. Chapter 9 is especially useful and probably the most important chapter within the book because here all the runes are explained in great detail. Chapters 10 is also useful because it shows the cosmological view of the Old Norse and the connection with the runes (24 pathways between the 9 worlds, 24 runes). Chapters 11, 12 display even more information about the runes and the way the ancient Norse people thought. The last chapter, 13, has a nice description of the gods of the old Norse.
