"The comments on ecological status and indications about rarity are, as far as I know, unique to his book. No other proponents of herbalism seem to be aware of this aspect of humans and their environments....this is the excellent product that we have come to expect from Moore. This delightful and informative book should be on the bookshelves of anyone interested in plants and people. Thanks for sharing with us Michael!"

Healing Herbs of the Upper Rio Grande: Traditional Medicine of the Southwest by L. S. M. Curtin, Michael Moore (Editor), Mimi Kamp (Illustrator), Mary Austin (Introduction), L. S. M. Curtin

First published in 1947 and long out of print, I was pleased to have the chance to annotate and update this seminal work on the traditional home remedies of the Spanish Southwest. Working with the publisher Jim Mafchir (we have worked together on all five of these books) and the illustrator Mimi Kamp, this book gave me the chance to edit Mrs. Curtin-Paloheimo's landmark text, add personal observations (I sold remedios for 15 years in Northern New Mexico), update the botanical nomenclature, add references, a glossary of local Spanish terms, and generally render this classic work more practical for current usage.

The Healing Power of Herbs: The Enlightened Person's Guide to the Wonders of Medicinal Plants by N.D. Michael T. Murray

Ingram

Some of the most powerful preventatives to modern ailments are not located in prescription drugs or vitamin pills but on a common spice rack. In this most up-to-date and carefully researched book, Dr. Murray shares the latest scientific findings about the power and efficacy of medicinal herbs.

About the Author:

Michael T. Murray, N.D. is widely regarded as one of the world's leading authorities on natural medicine. He is a graduate, faculty member, and serves on the Board of Trustees of Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Murray is the co-author of A Textbook of Natural Medicine, the definitive textbook on naturopathic medicine for physicians, as well as the consumer version - Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine. He has also written over 20 other books including The Healing Power of Herbs and The Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements.

As a consultant to the health food industry, Dr. Murray has been instrumental in bringing many effective natural products to North America, including:

·Glucosamine sulfate

·St. John's wort extract

·Ginkgo biloba extract

·Silymarin

·Enteric coated peppermint oil

·Saw palmetto berry extract

For the past twenty years, Dr. Murray has been compiling a massive database of original scientific studies from the medical literature. He has personally collected over 50,000 articles from the scientific literature which provide strong evidence on the effectiveness of diet, vitamins, minerals, glandular extracts, herbs, and other natural measures in the maintenance of health and the treatment of disease. It is from this constantly expanding database that Dr. Murray provides the answers on health and healing. According to Dr. Murray: "One of the great myths about natural medicines is that they are not scientific. The fact of the matter is that for most common illnesses there is greater support in the medical literature for a natural approach than there is for drugs or surgery."

Unfortunately, many people are not aware of the natural approach that can put them on the road to lifelong health. Michael T. Murray, N.D. has dedicated his life to educating physicians, patients, and the general public on the tremendous healing power of nature. In addition to his books, which have cumulative sales of over two million copies, Dr. Murray has written thousands of articles, appeared on hundreds of radio and TV programs, and lectured to hundreds of thousands of people nationwide.

How to Prevent and Treat Cancer With Natural Medicine by Michael T. Murray (Editor), Tim Birdsall, Joseph E. Pizzorno, Paul Reilly

From Publishers Weekly:

This encyclopedic compendium of "natural" medicinal strategies offers encouragement and much sound advice to cancer patients and those seeking to ward off the disease. The authors, doctors of naturopathy, advocate complementing, not replacing, standard therapies with alternative therapies to prevent cancer, slow its progress and cope with the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Their emphasis is on nutrition and diet, including vitamin and mineral supplements rich in antioxidants and heavy doses of herbal teas and fish oil, but they also cover acupuncture, hydrotherapy and massage. Their sober approach cites numerous medical studies, including those with conflicting results, to back up their claims, and warns readers when natural medicines are contraindicated or might interfere with standard medications. The sometimes bewildering amount of information is clearly summarized in bullet-pointed regimens tailored to specific kinds of cancer and treatment protocols, and accompanied with sample menus and recipes to make a low-fat, low-sodium, hot-dog-free (studies link the consumption of cured meats to childhood cancers such as leukemia) diet more palatable. While the scientific jury is still out on the efficacy of some of the authors' recommendations, their basic program-stop smoking and drinking, exercise, eat lots of whole grains, fruits and vegetables-is uncontroversial.

The authors are naturopathic doctors--they focus on promoting health and treating disease with nontoxic, natural therapies. Naturopathic medicine follows these seven principles:

  1. Do no harm: use safe, effective, natural therapies.
  2. Nature has healing powers: the physician's job is to enhance the body's natural power to heal itself.
  3. Identify and treat the cause: find the cause, rather than just suppress the symptoms.
  4. Treat the whole person: administer to the patient's physical, mental/emotional, spiritual, and social sides.
  5. The physician is a teacher: educate and motivate patients to take more responsibility for their health.
  6. Prevention is the best cure: health-supporting life habits prevent disease.
  7. Establish health and wellness: increase the patient's positive physical and mental state.

This book shows you how to improve your health through a positive mental attitude, healthy lifestyle, health-promoting diet, and supplements, with plenty of practical tips. Learn disease prevention through enhancing key body systems. The bulk of the book details natural remedies for treating more than 70 ailments. Each includes symptoms, description, therapeutic considerations (with discussion of studies), and a treatment summary, including nutritional supplements and botanical (herbal) medicines. If you have a disease, this book will give you a valuable perspective on natural treatments. If you're well, it will give you many pointers for maintaining and enhancing your health. --Joan Price

Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide by Burton Goldberg, John W. Anderson, Larry Trivieri

The Definitive Guide is known as the Bible of alternative medicine. You may very well want to use a dictionary stand for this hefty tome; it weighs in at more than 1,000 pages. Nearly 400 doctors (M.D.s, Ph.D.s, naturopaths, Doctors of Oriental Medicine, and osteopaths) contribute their cutting-edge knowledge, and the list of names is impressive. You'll find words of advice from Joseph Pizzorno, the president of Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington; C. Norman Shealy, the cofounder of the American Holistic Medical Association; Nobel laureate Linus Pauling; Deepak Chopra; and Joan Borysenko, author and director of the Mind-Body Health Sciences in Boulder, Colorado.

After an intriguing, optimistic look at "The Future of Medicine," the book is divided into two sections. The first profiles 43 alternative therapies--acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, qigong, hyperthermia, and yoga among them--including their development, how they work, proven uses, and controversial or yet-to-be-proven uses, along with contact information for organizations. The second section covers 105 topics such as headaches, mental health, and allergies, along with the alternative therapies that are most likely to help alleviate pain and encourage healing. This guide is easy enough to understand to make it perfect for home reference, while it would also make a fine resource for health care providers interesting in learning more about alternative medicine. --Erica Jorgensen
