Volta
Bjork returns to her iconic, innovative and rhythmic roots with Volta. Featuring her own infamous beats and collaborations with Timbaland, Antony Hegarty, Brian Chippendale and an all-female Icelandic brass section, the end result is an explosion of beats and an amalgamtion of sound and visuals that give Volta a life of its own, like the world hasn't seen from Bjork in years.

Medùlla
Normally, an artist such as Björk with a mass audience across the globe steadily eases off as the back-catalog starts to grow. However, Medùlla, the fifth proper studio album from Björk is without a doubt the most challenging collection of music she has ever released.
For the most part, the album is made up of layers upon layers of processed vocal parts arranged in either harmony or dissonance such as "Vokuro" and "Oll Birtan," respectively. Some, such as "Show Me Forgiveness" are simple acapella, the aforementioned sounding like a vocal cut from Debut minus the music. Another echo of Björk days gone by is "Desired Constellation," a slow trancy pulse underpinning her distinct vocals. "Where Is the Line," "Who Is It," and "Triumph of a Heart" are a bit grimier with a semi-urban twist, the latter a fantastically funky beatbox number with an outstanding introduction, the closest moment to a pop song appearing on Medùlla.
Although traditional instruments and breaks have been removed from this album, Medùlla is no great departure for Bjork but in a sense it is radically different from any of her previous work. Some will love it, some hate it, and some just won't be sure what to think. --David Trueman
Album Description:
Björk is one of the most recognized stars in the world. She has sold millions of copies of her groundbreaking albums, she is an icon of cutting edge style, and she has received worldwide acclaim as an actress. Medulla, Björk's first new studio album in three years, finds her delving deeper than ever before into her haunting and exhilarating sound and vision. Innovative as always, Björk has this time built the songs on Medulla entirely from vocal tracks, with no instruments appearing on the album, creating a soundscape unlike anything you've ever heard before. Special guests include Rahzel from The Roots, Mike Patton of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, an Inuit throat singer, an Icelandic choir, the world's greatest human beatboxes and more.

Vespertine
Ever since Björk's vital, effusive 1993 debut, her music has been increasingly intimate, gently private, and concerned with seclusion. It's typical then that Vespertine's first single is called "Hidden Place." The studious solitude is rewarding, though. Vespertine is a lush, gorgeous swell of midpace electronica, symphonic strings, and Björk's uniquely alien, spectral vocals. There are fantastical wonders here. "Cocoon" (another eulogy to withdrawal from the world) is delicate as a breath, Björk bjork sounding too fragile to be flesh as she lauds "a beauty this immense." "Pagan Poetry" and "Aurora," likewise, are adrift in an enchanted reverie. When she chooses, she crafts killer tunes; "It's Not up to You" is as lovely as anything on Post. Yet, frequently, on such tracks as the yearning, glancing "Undo," Björk bjork seems to be simply thinking aloud, reveling in this wildly rich and visceral music. She's reclaimed cutting-edge electronica, so often the province of geeks and technicians, for the poets and the passionate. Vespertine is a landmark, a revelation, and a truly fabulous achievement. --Ian Gittins

Selmasongs (soundtrack to 'Dancer in the Dark')
Inspired by the film Dancer in the Dark's Broadwayesque emotional sweep, Björk stretches herself with orchestral mood swings and a darker, more experimental palette. The result is the most difficult record she's made since her Sugarcubes days, but a few listens reveal the thrilling heart of a truly multifaceted and immensely brave composer. --Matthew Cooke

Homogenic
Rolling Stone (10/16/97)
...she leaves home and investigates love's bumpier back roads....celebrates difference and challenges listeners to explore the joys of contradiction with open ears and vivid imagination....one of the boldest--and most exciting--albums of the year.
Entertainment Weekly (9/26/97)
...may be Björk's most audacious move in a career filled with them....On roughly half the album she and coproducer Mark Bell...take two seemingly incompatible genres--techno and classical--and weld them together. It's like sneaking a boom box into a chamber recital and seeing what happens...

Telegram
The Icelandic iconoclast is a past master of deconstructing her studio recordings, and here she plays an active role in helping a crew of remixers and guest artistes get medieval with tracks off 1995's Post. Trip-hop, jungle, and industrial flavors will draw the Tricky crowd, and Brodsky Quartet puts a string-driven spin on "Hyperballad," but it's the lush Deodata treatment of "Isobel" that'll make your head spin. --Jeff Bateman
Rolling Stone (1/23/97) ...TELEGRAM is no slapdash effort; Björk bjork recorded new vocals for many of the songs and collaborated with a well-chosen array of artists from the avant-garde and electronic worlds.

Debut
The hugely popular Debut transformed ex-Sugarcube Björk from cult icon to full-blown global style object, showcasing her extraordinary imagination and diversity on material ranging from the invigorating disco stylings of Big Time Sensuality, through the gentler ambient and techno pulses of One Day and Violently Happy to the outer fringes of avant-garde jazz, courtesy of World Saxophone Quartet's Oliver Lake, who contributes minimalist horn harmonies to The Anchor Song and a complex orchestral-jazz arrangement to Aeroplane. Björk herself brings a naive exultatory spirit to the songs, rendered all the more piquant by the sophistication of her melodies and the inventive-ness of co-producer Nellee Hooper's arrangements.
New Musical Express (12/25/93) ... DEBUT is a musical treasure chest of organic techno beats, twinkly jazz serenades and otherworldly nursery rhymes, disregarding categories and [displaying] a bewitching faith in pop's ability to challenge...

Sugar Cubes - Life's too Good
Rare is the debut that displays such fully formed talent as Iceland's Sugarcubes' first album. Highlighted by the Cocteau Twins-influenced single "Birthday," two other provocative singles, "Deus" and "Coldsweat," and by the incredible vocal gymnastics of Björk Gudmundsdottir, Life's Too Good brilliantly shows a new band staking out its own sonic space. Einar Orn contributes an electronically reprocessed trumpet, and a few awkwardly charming and ranting vocals as well, but this is clearly Björk's show. Her vocal range is staggering. The CD reissue adds six extra tracks, several of which are sung in Icelandic. --Rob O'Connor

Sugar Cubes - Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week
The Sugarcubes have injected some necessary imagination back into pop. Whether we'll be playing them tomorrow, let alone next week, who knows? But Today, The Sugarcubes stand out. --Martin Aston

Sugar Cubes - Stick Around for Joy
Stung by the hostile reaction to their epic bout of silliness Here Today Tomorrow Next Week, the Sugarcubes took three years off and went back to Reykjavik to get proper jobs, or record jazz albums, or whatever.
When they returned in 1992, with Stick Around For Joy, they were tighter, groovier, more dance-influenced (Björk had meanwhile appeared on 808 State's album Ex:El) and more focused.
Hit, the first single off the album, ironically wasn't one, despite being an absolute pop gem. Walkabout likewise sank without a trace, and the album was never really given that much consideration, as rumours abounded that Björk was about to go solo.
But, despite being a lot more conventional than the previous two 'Cubes albums, Stick Around For Joy has much to recommend it. Lucky Night is very amusing - a song about the buzz Bjork gets from doing 'two things at a time' - and Walkabout is truly beautiful, with its ideas about 'hunting moomins' and a throbbing big bassline.
The percussion sounds fantastic. It is a better album than most gave it credit for, but the three year hiatus and Björk's imminent next move, and the fact that most people couldn't stand the majestic Mr Einar Orn, meant that it has often been overlooked. But the voice! the voice! Make it your third Sugarcubes purchase.
