Ali Akbar Khan - Garden of Dreams
One of my all time favorites, Garden of Dreams is another great Ali Akbar Khansahib masterpiece. Although a fine example of Indian ragas, I believe this music would appeal to non-Indian music fans, as it seems to me the western orchestral instruments would help westerners gradually adjust to the new environment of North Indian classical music.

Bill Frisell - In Line
Beautiful ambient guitar textures with a melancholy tinge. Upright bass accompanies and enhances the depth of this recording. One of Bill's best.

Future Sound of London - Lifeforms
Alternative Press (7/95) ...Future Sound Of London's flowing material forms true sound gardens, within which can be heard the rich heritage of the masters of the first Golden Age of Electronics: Klaus Schulze, Ash Ra Temple, and Tangerine Dream...
Option (11-12/94) ...LIFEFORMS is sensory overload that engages the mind instead of alienating it. Throughout the 92-minute program, the `trips' that ambient techno aims to replicate happen naturally and vividly...

Brian Eno - Ambient 1: Music for Airports
This complex sound sculpture was created by Brian Eno in 1978 and was even installed for a while at the Marine Terminal of New York at LaGuardia Airport. The ambient-minimalist soundscape has been alternately described as background Muzak, a profoundly artificial musical milieu, and a groundbreaking studio creation. Eno designed Music for Airports from a few simple notes and the serial organization of variable tape loops that didn't quite match up. It's a groundbreaking elaboration on the aural/spatial dimension that utilizes silence, piano, synthesizer, female voices, and, most importantly, the technology of the studio. A true metaclassic, the "music" is divided into four distinct movements. This record is the first of Eno's ambient series and is undoubtedly the best. --Mitch Myers

Brian Eno - the Drop
It took me awhile to fully appreciate this CD. It is SO mellow, the only time it should be listened to is while soaking in a hot bath with candles everywhere or as you drift off to sleep. Not a daytime CD - meant for night's starry blankets. --Rich Brown

Ravi Shankar - Mantram: Chant of India
Mantram is Ravi Shankar's effort to set Sanskrit chants from ancient Hindu scriptures to music, and the result is a captivating mix of chant and music. Produced by George Harrison, this collection of mantras and prayers from the Vedas, Upanishads, and other scriptures powerfully transports the listener to a place of peace where it's possible to be one with the universe. It's as if a heavy, enveloping cloak of serenity falls from the dark, floating sounds of cello opening the CD. Shankar employs flute, tamboura, harp, and other instruments to accent the mighty "Om" thread that weaves itself through the cloth of this album, bringing together deep, ominous voices with delicate, earthly instruments. One looking for extensive Shankar sitar might be disappointed, but the beauty of this artist's creativity and spiritual vision sweeps one away into a larger, more meaningful listening experience. Highly recommended. --Karen Karleski
